How do I calculate what size generator my business needs?
Start by adding up the wattage of all essential equipment that must keep running during a power cut. Include computers, servers, tills, refrigeration, lighting, security systems, and any machinery critical to your operations. Add around 20% headroom for startup surges and future growth. A small office might get by with 15 to 20kVA, while a warehouse with cold storage or manufacturing equipment could need 100kVA or more. Our team can help you work through the calculation if you’re unsure.
What's the difference between standby and prime power ratings?
The standby rating is the maximum output for emergency backup when mains power fails, intended for variable loads and limited running hours per year. The prime rating is a lower, continuous output figure for unlimited running hours. For typical business backup where you’re covering occasional outages, the standby rating is the relevant figure. If you’re using a generator as your primary power source or running it for extended periods daily, you should size based on the prime rating instead.
Should I choose an open frame or enclosed generator?
Enclosed (canopied) generators are quieter and weatherproof, making them suitable for outdoor installation in urban or suburban locations where noise could be an issue. Open frame generators are typically less expensive and easier to service, but they need housing in a plant room or purpose built enclosure. For most business premises, enclosed units are the practical choice unless you have dedicated indoor space with adequate ventilation.
Will a business generator start automatically during a power cut?
With an automatic transfer switch (ATS) installed, yes. The ATS monitors your mains supply and automatically starts the generator when power fails, switching your circuits over within seconds. When mains power returns, it transfers back and shuts the generator down. Most of our business backup generators are ATS compatible, and many businesses consider automatic operation essential for true standby protection.
How long will a business backup generator run continuously?
Runtime depends on the tank size and fuel consumption at your operating load. The Cummins C22 D5, for example, runs for over 34 hours at 75% load on its standard tank. Larger units like the C170 D5 manage around 14 hours before refuelling. For extended outages, many generators can be connected to external bulk fuel tanks, giving you days of runtime if needed.
