Expert advise on Standby Generators for Server Rooms

We recommend contacting a trained engineer for the installation of any standby generators within a server room. For free expert advice on the selecting and installation of our standby generator range please contact us.

What size generator does a server room need?

This depends entirely on your equipment load. Add up the power consumption of all servers, networking equipment, cooling systems, and UPS units, then add 20 to 25% headroom for startup loads and future expansion. Small server rooms might manage with 15 to 20kVA, while larger installations could need 100kVA or more. We’re happy to help you calculate the right size.

How long will a server room generator run on a single tank?

A typical standby generator provides around 8 hours of runtime on its standard tank at 75% load. For extended outages, most units can be connected to larger base tanks or external bulk fuel storage, giving you days of continuous operation if needed.

Do I need a UPS as well as a generator?

Yes. Generators take a few seconds to start and stabilise after a power failure. A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) bridges this gap, providing instant battery backup to keep your servers running until the generator takes over. The two systems work together to provide seamless protection.

Will the generator start automatically when the power fails?

With an automatic transfer switch (ATS) installed, yes. The ATS monitors your mains supply and automatically starts the generator within seconds of detecting a power failure. When mains power returns, it transfers back and shuts down the generator without any manual intervention.
