What size generator do I need for camping?
For most campers, a 2 to 3kVA inverter generator will cover typical needs like phone and laptop charging, LED lighting, a small fridge, and a portable TV. If you’re running higher draw items like an electric kettle, microwave, or air conditioning in a caravan, you’ll want something in the 3.5 to 5kVA range. The Honda EU22i at 2.2kVA is our most popular choice for lightweight camping, while the Pramac P3500i offers more headroom for those who need extra capacity.
What's the difference between an inverter generator and a conventional generator?
Inverter generators produce cleaner, more stable electricity that’s safe for sensitive electronics like laptops, phones, and camera equipment. They’re also significantly quieter and more fuel efficient because the engine speed adjusts automatically based on the load. Conventional generators run at a constant speed regardless of demand, which makes them louder and thirstier. For camping, inverter models are almost always the better choice.
How quiet are camping generators?
The inverter generators in our camping range are designed with noise in mind. The Honda EU22i operates at around 59 decibels at rated load, which is quieter than normal conversation. Most campsites have noise restrictions, typically requiring generators to stay below 70 decibels, and all our camping models fall comfortably within these limits. Running at lower loads reduces noise even further.
Can I use a camping generator to power my caravan or motorhome?
A 2 to 3kVA inverter generator will handle most caravan essentials including lighting, charging, a compressor fridge, and entertainment systems. If your caravan has air conditioning or you want to run a kettle and toaster, consider a 3.5kVA model or above. Make sure to check your caravan’s shore power rating to ensure compatibility.
How long will a camping generator run on a full tank?
Runtime depends on the model and how much power you’re drawing. The Honda EU22i runs for up to 8 hours on its 3.6 litre tank at rated load, and considerably longer at lighter loads thanks to its eco throttle feature. The Pramac P2200i manages around 4.5 hours, while larger models like the Honda EG5500 can run for over 8 ho
